Online Dating: 5 Tips for writing a better profile
18th June 2010
Many of us are on a journey to find love but simply do not have the time.
Whether it is because of a job, kids, or family some of us can’t go out to bars and events to try and meet people.
In these cases, online dating can be a great way to meet new people. When putting together your dating profile on any site you should follow these tips to writing a better profile.
1. Create a positive and catchy headline
Stay away from negative and apathetic headlines like “I am lonely” or “Why can’t I find the right person?” Positive headlines are proven to attract more profile views because no one is instantly attracted to negativity.
2. Choose the right photo that focuses on you
Choose a profile picture that showcases your face and/or your full body. Do not include photos of you and friends, family and especially exes. Make sure these photos are recent as well so your dates will know what to expect as you would want the same.
3. Let your profile information reflect who you really are
What you put in your profile should reflect the true you. Whether you are naturally funny, sarcastic, educated, or dry let that shine through. People will tend to notice when you aren’t being yourself. If they don’t by your profile they will instantly know when you get together for a date. Be proud of who you are because there is someone out there who will enjoy the real you.
4. Include what you want, not what you don’t want
Don’t make a three page list of qualities and traits that you are not looking for. You can turn people off instantly by appearing too picky even if you really aren’t. Tell what you are looking for in a relationship and in your partner. It is okay to include some things you are not looking for but try to keep the list very short and sweet.
5. Try to not to overuse adjectives
When putting together your profile don’t just throw a list of adjectives that you think fit you together. Instead, try to create stories or phrases. For example, if you are creative try giving examples of how you are creative. Are you a painter, crafter, musician, etc? Being more specific could catch the eye of someone interested in the same thing.
If you follow these tips to writing a better profile you are guaranteed to attract a better response. Know however, that online dating is not right for everyone. You may go weeks or months without receiving a response that you feel are adequate but remember that finding people takes time. Just as you would not jump into a relationship, you should take your time when meeting people off the internet.
Keeping your online dating profile updated and current will also help you appear in other people’s search results. If you stay honest, upfront and leave a little to the imagination you could find your perfect match.
